SDSU women win again on Waikiki

The San Diego State women's basketball team had several double-figure leads early in yesterday's game, but the Aztecs had to hold off several charges by Prairie View A&M (Texas) to earn a 58-53 win on the second day of the Waikiki Marriott Beach Classic in Honolulu.

A day after scoring a career-high 31 points in a 71-48 win over Hawaii, sophomore center Paris Johnson (San Diego High) tallied 23 points with eight rebounds and three blocked shots for the Aztecs (4-2).

Senior forward Jennifer Layton-Bailes added 15 points and 10 rebounds, Quenese Davis had six assists and six rebounds with three steals and two blocked shots and her sister Coco Davis had a career-high seven rebounds and three steals against the Panthers (1-5).

More basketball

Michelle Osier scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds, Alexis Gaskin added 13 points plus 10 rebounds with three blocked shots and Erin Noonan scored 12 points as the UCSD women beat Alaska 66-56 at the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational. The Tritons are 5-1. Sheena Brown had 14 points and Nicole Bozek added 13 points plus 10 rebounds for Alaska (3-4) . . . Jordan Lawley scored a career-high 31 points but the UCSD men fell to Central Washington 78-70 at the NDNU Thanksgiving Tournament in Belmont. Shane Poppen had 14 points of the bench for the Tritons (1-3). Jake Beitinger scored 21 points and Matt Penoncello added 19 for the Wildcats (2-1) . . . The PLNU women topped visiting Westminster (Utah) 92-73 as Colleen Planeta scored 30 points and Kaitlyn Trotter added 25 for the Sea Lions (2-1). Amanda Franz had 17 points against the Griffins (9-2) . . . Cal State San Bernardino scored 42-first half points en route to a 73-45 win over host San Diego Christian in a women's game. Dorchella James had 13 points and Lara Hertzog 12 rebounds to pace the Hawks (1-3). Krystal Urzua scored 22 points to lead CSUSB (2-2).
